About Paradise Square

New York, 1863. As the Civil War rages on, free Blacks and Irish immigrants live and love together in Lower Manhattan’s notorious Five Points slum. The amalgamation between the communities took its most exuberant form with raucous dance contests on the floors of the neighborhood bars and dance halls. It is here in the Five Points where tap dancing was born. But this racial equilibrium would come to a sharp and brutal end when President Lincoln’s need to institute the first Federal Draft to support the Union Army would incite the deadly NY Draft Riots of July 1863.

With visceral and nuanced staging and choreography that captures the pulsating energy when Black and Irish cultures meet and set to a contemporary score that reimagines early American song, Paradise Square depicts an overlooked true-life moment when hope and possibility shone bright. Don't miss Tony-winner of Best Actress in Leading Role in a Musical Joaquina Kalukango.

Entertaining, Ambitious, Great acting, Great writing, Great singing

See it if you'd enjoy fantastic melding of a historic time in a well-choreographed musical w/a hard-working cast - Tony worthy: Kalukango & Kennedy.

Don’t see it if you expect hummable tunes - here the lyrics tell much of the story & the orchestrations are often serious. The stage is a bit crowded for

Great staging, Riveting, Masterful, Intelligent, Great singing

See it if If you like a musical based on some serious historical American events surrounding slavery & Irish-driven race riots, this is your show.

Don’t see it if If you are not a fan of musicals, then skip the show. 2nd review OMG… this show is so much better than I remember.

Resonant, Ambitious, Great choreography, Great singing, Thought-provoking

See it if Great choreography by Bill T. Jones. Joaquina Kalukango brings down the house w/ her rendition of 'Let it Burn' the best number in the show.

Don’t see it if The first act could use editing, a little slow. Use of profanities, if thinking of bringing kids. Don't like historical stories.

Uneven, Absorbing, Great singing

See it if Basically see it to hear Joaquina Kalukango blow the doors off the place. Without her and that song, the show is low 70s for unevenness.

Don’t see it if Even though it is uneven, I still think it is worth it. A good history lesson to boot.
