THE COAST STARLIGHT is set on a train, but like its name, it explores dimensions beyond the here and now. A young man boards in LA, headed far away. A young woman sits down and quietly sketches him across the aisle. Other passengers are seated nearby, each with their stories held close. With wit and insight, the play explores the very human inclination to guess at other people’s lives… If only you could say what you were thinking about them, or hear what they are thinking about you… If only you could connect with a stranger who might change your life. And how do you make sense of a romantic yearning you feel for someone you don't even know... Do you say something to bridge the gap? Or does it all stay in your head?
In fascinating fashion, the conversations and encounters in this play are sometimes real, sometimes not. The almost magical environment of the night train blurs whether it is real connection they’re experiencing or the power of imagination.
