About Rock & Roll Man

Rock & Roll Man is the original musical about a musical original.

Alan Freed was a Cleveland DJ who heard the future—and knew he had to let it sing. He named the genre “Rock & Roll,” bringing music to the masses and integrating artists and audiences on the airwaves and in concerts for the first time in history. Along the way, he became an icon to the nation’s youth—and a target for the nation’s establishment.

Rock & Roll Man features classics created by legends such as Little Richard, Chuck Berry, LaVern Baker, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, as well as original songs written just for the stage.

Freed’s concerts were banned in Boston (and in multiple other New England cities) after an overcrowded Chuck Berry concert sparked riots.

Rock & Roll Man features a book by Gary Kupper (Freckleface Strawberry The Musical - Outer Critics Circle nomination), Larry Marshak (editor of Night Beat Magazine and Rock Magazine), and Rose Caiola (Freckleface Strawberry The Musical - Outer Critics Circle nomination), original music and lyrics by Gary Kupper, Vintage Rock & Roll Elements developed by Marshak Classic Music LLC and Gary Kupper Music, direction by Tony Award®-nominee Randal Myler (It Ain’t Nothin’ But The Blues), and choreography by Stephanie Klemons (Associate Choreographer and Global Dance Supervisor of Hamilton).

Fun, Fluffy, Great singing

See it if you enjoy slick bio-jukebox musicals

Don’t see it if you are looking for something fresh - def seem this before, but it is a well done version on a smaller stage.

Nostalgic jukebox, Tricky angle, Informative, Great staging, Great singing

See it if 2 acts 2hrs + of brilliant early rock&roll classics; how a DJ started to mix both black & white singers on tour; I didn’t know this person..

Don’t see it if Now I have respect for him, want to know more. Leads are Broadway veterans, flawless singing/dancing. Could fall into “white savior” trap.

Fluffy, Great singing, Entertaining, Delightful

See it if Just go and enjoy the music and the vibe of the naive bygone days. Good performance by all. Energetic dancing. Perfect musicians and singers

Don’t see it if If you expect super plot - do not go. 2 or 3 dirty jokes affect your hearing. Elevators did not work, but show is on the lowest level

Relevant, Quirky, Great staging, Great singing, Entertaining

See it if Tells the little-known story of a flawed but important DJ, Al Freed, who helped popularize early rock and roll, R&B to integrated audiences,

Don’t see it if Not interested in American history, early rock & roll, & the battle for integration on radio stations. A couple of swear words.
